risk management
One way to think about driving is in terms of risk management.  Driving is very risky especially for 16 to 24 year olds.  Below are some tools all drivers can use to manage their risk behind the wheel.

Following distance

Today we teach people to use a 3 to 4 second following distance. Simply pick a fixed object and when the car that you are following passes that object you start counting.  When you pass the fixed object you stop counting.  You should be no less that 3 seconds away.  Please remember you will need 5 seconds or more if the road conditions are not ideal.

Seat belts are the single most important safety device.  One click can mean the difference between walking away or being rolled away by EMTS.  The seat belt is designed to keep you in the safety cage in a crash and keeps you from being thrown out of the vehicle.  It also, keeps you from becoming a flying object inside the vehicle.
