Step #1 - Instruction Permit
Who: Anyone under age 18
When: When a (TELL) Traffic Education Learners License is obtained in a state approved driver education program at age 14 1/2. At age 16 a driver may obtain a regular learners license.
How Long: Minimum of six months
Conditions:
*50 hours of supervised driving (at least 10 hours at night) by a licensed parent.
Step #2 - Restricted license
When: When step 1 is successfully completed
How long: One year or until age 18
Conditions:
* Each occupant must wear a seatbelt
* No Unsupervised driving between 11:00pm and 5am (limited exceptions apply)
* For the first six months, no more than one non-family passenger under the age of 18
* For the second six months, no more than three non-family passengers under the age of 18
Step #3 - Full privilege License
When: When step 2 is successfully completed or reach the age of 18
Step #1:
Students must have their TELL permit to begin logging their supervised driving hours. The log book will be handed out during the parent meeting and please be aware that the DMV will ask to see the log book.
Step #2:
During this phase, lasting one year, the new driver may drive by themselves. However, there are some restrictions that do apply. See the conditions above.
Step #3:
After successfully completing steps 1 and 2 the new driver becomes a full privileged driver.
